Desktop in Lion? Full screen Mail? - Uncle Wig - 07-13-2011

These two features concern me. I like my desktop, such as it is. I looks to me that Launchpad only occupies the desktop when you have it running, correct?

And MUST Mail run full-screen? I drag things into and out of Mail all the time; I think having it full-screen could be a real drag (no pun intended).

In general I wonder if Lion can be used like Leopard or Snow Leopard, minus the iOS stuff which doesn't apply to me (no laptop machine, no iPhone).

The only compelling reason I have to maybe want to upgrade to Lion is iCloud, and then only because it's the only way I can keep my .Mac email address which I've used for work for several years. I would like to avoid having to switch to a different email address.

There's a handful of people here who have apparently been running recent developer copies. Maybe one of them will chime in.

But it's my understanding is that the full screen stuff is optional. LaunchPad certainly is.

Worry about what you see when Lion is launched, and not before. I'm more concerned about what I don't see than what I do see in the rumor mill.

Most folks I expect will have their biggest problem with the loss of Rosetta and PPC apps.

Open System Profiler, select Applications, then select the "Kind" column. That gives you a list of all PPC apps you have installed when you scroll down. None of those will work in Lion.

You will have to find substitutes or run twos OSes, SL along with Lion, on separate drives, booting into each as you need it.

Lion is the first new OS that I maybe able to do without, if everything I read is true.

Mail does not have to run full screen. Its almost just like the old mail, though it has a useful 3-column layout.

Full screen in Safari and Firefox can be really nice IMHO, but its also completely optional.

Launch pad is very much like the old dashboard; it only shows when you click on it. If you don't choose to use it you'll never even know its there.

Cool - good to know. In answer to Modelmac's comment: I worry about this now because dealing with the possible loss of my .mac email address is a rather large issue. If Lion is useable in more or less the way Leopard is, I may well upgrade to it.
