Address Book problem - PeterB - 09-02-2011

Hi everyone, I posted this a day or so ago, have Googled for ideas, but come up with nothing. Here's the post again: http://forums.macresource.com/read.php?1,1216149,1216149#msg-1216149

Re: Address Book problem - deckeda - 09-02-2011

and JEBB mentioned vCARD 3.0 in that thread

Yep and I just responded.

Re: Address Book problem - Chakravartin - 09-02-2011

This worked for me when the same thing happened in Snow Leopard on my MBP:

Set it to export in vCard 2.1 format without photos, then quit the app.

Open it again and set it to export in vCard 3.0 with photos.

Yeah, Snow Leopard sucks.

(Sorry! Couldn't resist. Happy Friday everyone!)

Chakravartin, when I tried doing that, it appears that it IS exporting the photos when I set it to export in vCard 3.0 with photos, but then when I try to import those vCards back in, it appears not to be importing the photos. I'm wondering if the reason is somehow because the contacts that I'm exporting obviously already exist, so when I import them, the preexisting contacts (with photos) are there, and when I review the duplicates, the old ones have photos but the new (importing) ones don't. In other words, maybe the reason the photos aren't showing up is because the contacts already exist? That makes no sense really, but it's the only thing I can think of. Obviously I don't want to delete those contacts to test the theory, because then I'd lose the photos on import, if the photos don't get imported.

Test it by simply dragging out a contact, dragging it back in and when the Address Book pops up the "duplicate message" window click the "review duplicate" button and then the "keep both" button.

When I did this before messing with the pref's as above, the imported contacts had no photos. After messing with the pref's as above, the imported contacts were indistinguishable from the originals.

I'm fairly certain that it's a problem with the pref's. If tweaking the pref's as above doesn't solve the problem then remove the com.apple.AddressBook.plist file from your ~/Library/Preferences folder and then re-do your preferences in the Address Book app.

Weird. I just tried doing exactly this, and when the "Duplicate contact" message thing came up, it showed the old contact as having the photo, and the new (imported) contact as not having the photo (that's what's happened before too). For the heck of it, I did exactly what you suggested, "review duplicate" and then "keep both", and now the imported new contact HAS the photo. (Meaning that they both now have the photo.) What gives??? Is the preview of the duplicate just not showing the photo? Or is it that it's importing the contact, then seeing you already have the same one, and copying the photo?

Edit: for the heck of it, I just deleted both of these contacts, then tried importing again, and sure enough the photo is there. So it must be the preview during the Review Duplicate step that is not working properly.

Re: Address Book problem - Chakravartin - 09-03-2011

Strange symptom.

When it happened to me, once I changed the pref's and then restored the original settings, my previews showed the thumbnails properly.

Images in a vCard file aren't just references back to the thumbnail in the Address Book DB. They're stored in the file. You can open an exported vCard file in TextEdit and have a look for yourself. There should be a second copy of the thumbnail stored when you duplicate an entry by importing from a vCard file.

BTW: Don't forget that you can export your whole Address Book DB to an archive that can be re-imported if you want to experiment more and might delete or modify contacts that you'd want to restore.
