Maybe there's an OS issue.
Run the Disk Utility, verify the disk and if it doesn't find anything wrong then reinstall the last OS update using the combo updater.

ALFA WiFi units connect to a USB2 port but shows up in the System Preferences>Network pane as an Ethernet~WLAN

Thanks to all for figuring this out. Now I suppose I should connect mine and with these instructions at hand on what I need to do to make it work.
