ahh-jeez my 15"macbook pro santa rosa won't go past the blue screen! - robfilms - 09-13-2011 i have a very well loved mbp 15" 2.4 santa rosa. http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook_pro/stats/macbook-pro-core-2-duo-2.4-15-santa-rosa-specs.html i am aware of the video cable issues and have been dreading this day. i power up, get the chime, and the apple logo, then some spinning graphic, followed by a lite blue-ish screen, followed by a darker blue screen, then nothing! this just happened. the mbp has spent its entire life in a hard speck case and a padded neoprene wrapper. i have babied this machine and it has always performed. i did have apple care but that ended in april 2011. what is apple's policy in dealing with this machine? thanks in advance rob Re: ahh-jeez my 15"macbook pro santa rosa won't go past the blue screen! - hal - 09-13-2011 There is a recall on this unit for bad video cards. It's certainly worth going to the apple store and checking to see if that's the problem. If not, then apple's policy is easy - give them money and they'll fix it for ya. Re: ahh-jeez my 15"macbook pro santa rosa won't go past the blue screen! - GGD - 09-13-2011 Can you boot it from an install DVD or another hard drive? That might help determine if you are really having hardware problems, or if your system software is causing problems. If it is the NVIDIA GPU problem, it's covered by an extended repair program, and it doesn't matter if you had AppleCare or not. http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377 Re: ahh-jeez my 15"macbook pro santa rosa won't go past the blue screen! - robfilms - 09-13-2011 i've read various accounts of apple saying "its the logic board" which obfuscates whether the nvidia chip is the actual source of the issue. last thing i need is to stand and attempt to reason with a behind schedule apple "genius". jeez louise. i guess there is more to come! thanks in advance. be well rob Re: ahh-jeez my 15"macbook pro santa rosa won't go past the blue screen! - decay - 09-13-2011 there's a specific graphics test we must run on that unit; if certain conditions are met, the GPU fails and a replacement is issued. Re: ahh-jeez my 15"macbook pro santa rosa won't go past the blue screen! - hal - 09-13-2011 This really doesn't sound like the nvidea issue. Usually, the machine boots, but the video is either blank or distorted. But it's certainly worth a look. You won't be 'reasoning' with the genius. It's a simple test. Pass/fail... Re: ahh-jeez my 15"macbook pro santa rosa won't go past the blue screen! - Catzilla - 09-13-2011 That's what happened to mine. Apple hooks up a external drive and tries to boot it. They can tell if it is the video issue or if you need the the $300 depot repair. Still a bargain IMHO.... Re: ahh-jeez my 15"macbook pro santa rosa won't go past the blue screen! - sekker - 09-13-2011 Rob, Apple might just repair it, no problem. I'm typing on a Santa Rosa machine that had to have both the GPU and motherboard replaced due to this problem - well after Apple Care had run out. Good suggestion, though, is to document as much of the video problems as you can. I had actually taken some pictures of the odd graphics problems (using my iPhone!) a couple days before the machine totally failed. There is also an entire section on xlr8yourmac.com about what to do if the Apple Care genius balks at repairing it. Basically, if the GPU goes totally wrong, it'll take out the motherboard, too. If the machine cannot boot, it cannot run the software diagnostic. We just had one of these machines totally fail after the GPU started acting up at age 2 years and 10 months. They told us it would run $1300 to repair! We've sent it in on a kind of appeal - we won't know until later this week whether it's going to be covered. Re: ahh-jeez my 15"macbook pro santa rosa won't go past the blue screen! - decay - 09-13-2011 http://support.apple.com/kb/ts2377 documenting won't make it pass or fail the GPU test. They ran the replacement without a hitch, but I added a lot of documentation when we sent it in. Don't know the two are connected, but it can't hurt! |
