New Watch! - mrlynn - 10-04-2011

I just got a new watch, Maximilian Radio Controlled Watch, model 5010-3.

It's MUCH larger (diameter and thickness) than any watch I've ever had, so will take getting used to, but like the clock on my wall, synchronizes to the Atomic Clock in Colorado:

I've been looking for a couple of years, and this is the only RC 'atomic' watch I've found where the minute and second hands actually touch the indicators.

Discovered it was on special at Long Island Watch (the only place in the USA I've found that carries the Maximilians) for $99 (instead of $170), so I couldn't resist.

If you buy one, tell Marc at LIW that I sent you. Wink

Does it set itself after time changes? I was about to get this one http://www.stauer.com/item/Stauer-Titanium-Atomic-Watch/17468/3 but read people had a lot of difficulty setting it.

How does it know what time zone you are in?

Yes, "The watch adjusts itself automatically and changes to summer and winter time by radio command."

My LaCrosse wall clock does, too; I think most 'atomic' clocks/watches do; maybe it's a function of the time signal from Colorado.

The instructions don't seem too complicated.

It comes pre-set for Pacific Time. You just pull out the crown all the way and advance the hour hand to the correct zone—simple.

Note: The Maximilians that Long Island Watch imports are set to receive the US radio signal, not the European one. So they won't be radio-controlled if you travel outside of the States. Contrariwise, the German ones won't get the signal here.

There are a bunch of other Maximilian radio-controlled watches on this page:

Some are slimmer and more delicate-looking than the one I got.

I'm sure I looked at them, but I really wanted the minute and second hands (the one you linked to doesn't have a second hand) to actually touch the indicator marks, and I didn't see any RC watches that fit that bill—and were modestly priced.

There are a bunch of Japanese 'solar-atomic' watches, which is a neat idea, but I couldn't find an analog one on line that could tell me exactly what second I was on (I have to time out my radio show to the second during the Metropolitan Opera season, and when I started looking there was no accurate clock in the studio—now there is one, but I still want confirmation on my wrist).

Not sure what you mean by "touch the indicator marks"? Do they really touch them or just move over them? How can you tell before holding the watch in hand? From pictures?
