A very down day... - MacArtist - 10-08-2011 I go on a computer call today. Nothing too difficult. I have been taking care of this family's Macs since 1999. Very nice people. The mother is in her 70's. She is very, very nice. She has always had a non-direct train of thought when talking to her. I just always listen carefully. Today, she tells me that she is undergoing tests for Alzheimer's. She won't get the results until the end of the month. She asks me at the end of our session if I see a difference in her (referring to if I see any symptoms of the disease). Before I could answer, she was crying. I couldn't fight back the tears. I pray she doesn't. I spend just about as much time listening and talking about our families as much as I do working on any computer issues. I basically charge enough to cover the cost of gas to drive out to her place. Re: A very down day... - haikuman - 10-08-2011 Empathy and compassion can be very powerful emotions... Perhaps all our nerves and emotions are raw as we harbor our own pain in the light of SJ's passing intertwined with perpetual daily challenges... I have got your back MacArtist and some energy to share *(:>* Rudie:priate: Re: A very down day... - abevilac - 10-08-2011 hang in there, macartist. Re: A very down day... - john-o - 10-08-2011 Have strength. I think we can all likely tell similar stories these days. The march of time... Hang in there... John Re: A very down day... - Ombligo - 10-09-2011 I do not mean to offer this as medical advice but there is a very interesting research case being conducted by a nearby doctor whose husband has early onset Alzheimer's. It is not a cure but does hold promise to help offset the disease for awhile. Consider it is a natural substance and does not interfere with any other treatment, there is no harm in trying it if she needs. http://www.tampabay.com/news/aging/doctor-says-an-oil-lessened-alzheimers-effects-on-her-husband/879333 Re: A very down day... - blooz - 10-09-2011 Man that's tough. I'm sure tho, that your sympathy for her is comforting to her. Re: A very down day... - olnacl - 10-09-2011 I too have a client in similar circumstances. She's 90, lives in my subdivision and is a recent cancer and stroke survivor. She worries about, and apologizes for, having trouble speaking and remembering things, She calls me for a number of things - telephone answering device doesn't work, dropped and broke the TV remote and got a new one but needed it programmed, and, occasionally, a computer problem. Yesterday it was that she couldn't get into Facebook or her email - turned out it was nothing but an uppercase letter written in her notes when the PW used a lower case. She called her son to ask how she connects to the Internet as he bought her a netbook with 3g rather than cable or DSL. He seemed glad I was helping her out. Long story short, she had an old Dell desktop and didn't want it and, as things go some days, I was at the Humane Society animal shelter that afternoon to fix a network issue (I work for them pro bono) and they asked if there was a way to put a second computer in the vet's surgery. I called Betty, my client, and asked if she'd donate her old Dell to the Humane Society and she agreed, so I picked it up and brought it home. I replaced (would you believe it) an original 4GB drive that was transferred into the Dell from her previous computer by her son, apparently when he bought it for her years ago) with a 60GB Apple IDE I had laying around and found a couple sticks of RAM. Spent the evening installing Windows XP and 117 updates, but it's ready to go to the shelter on Tuesday. I'll contribute an Ethernet switch but may have to find a flat panel monitor as the CRT she gave me will be too large for the space available. Hopefully the 60 GB will be enough HDD as it's just used as a terminal, mostly. Some times things just work out. Now she wants to know if I'll repaint her front sidewalk… Re: A very down day... - GGD - 10-09-2011 Someday we'll be 90...
