iPhone 4S Pre-Orders Top One Million in First 24 Hours
CUPERTINO, California—October 10, 2011—Apple® today announced pre-orders of its iPhone® 4S have topped one million in a single day, surpassing the previous single day pre-order record of 600,000 held by iPhone 4. iPhone 4S is the most amazing iPhone yet, packed with incredible new features including Apple’s dual-core A5 chip for blazing fast performance and stunning graphics; an all new camera with advanced optics; full 1080p HD resolution video recording; and Siri™, an intelligent assistant that helps you get things done just by asking.

“We are blown away with the incredible customer response to iPhone 4S,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “The first day pre-orders for iPhone 4S have been the most for any new product that Apple has ever launched and we are thrilled that customers love iPhone 4S as much as we do.”

Doomed. Yes, Doomed.

Despite the Leaders untimely passing, despite a non-leaderific keynote, the Apple Invention and Quality Machine marches on, and the customers recognize it.

I wonder if that's through Apple only. I pre-ordered through Verizon.

I read that as "45s" - I'm still tuned into music more than tech, I guess.

Yep - Apple customers were 'disappointed'

Would someone come up with a battery-sipping 4G chip-set so we can have that in the next iPhone, please?

Be careful what you ask for. My son's absolutely gorgeous 4G Android with a 4" screen absolutely flies in 4G. However, when it has to ratchet down to 3G, it is one slow puppy. My 3GS iPhone runs rings around it. He tells me that more than 1/2 the time he is outside 4G reception areas, and in my little college town (Go Gators!), there is very little if any 4G reception away from campus.

So, when Apple comes out with a phone with 4G reception, I hope that it maintains Apple's fast 3G prowess.

Pam, the article I read said this:

"Apple announced today that more than a million pre-orders for its new iPhone 4S were taken in the first 24 hours after making them available through the Apple online store and wireless carriers."

True, 4G isn't widespread yet, but by the end of 2012 should be.

3G here (Verizon or AT&T) is only about 1 MBps down (I've tested both w/ MiFi-type devices)

Versus my 4G WiMax iSpot at consistently 6 MBps down (I expect LTE will be faster)

I think there were two things that greatly helped this.

1) Sprint, first time available for it's customers.
2) Verizon, I suspect that a lot of customers didn't immediately jump on the iPhone 4 when it came to Verizon in Jan, expecting a new version of the phone in June, and then continued to wait when nothing appeared in June.

This was the first US intro of a new iPhone simultaneously available to customers of 3 carriers.
