Anyone buy Woolrich shirts? - SteveO - 11-12-2011
I had a Woolrich chamois shirt for about 10 years. I finally retired it last year as it was all faded out and had shrunk just a little in the cuffs. Still fit fine other than that. It was one of my favorite shirts ever. Last year at end of season I bought a couple of Woolrich chamois shirts to replace it. I've only worn one to test it out in the wash. It shrunk unbelievably, about 2-4" across chest/back and cuffs (length). Just a word to the wise: they don't make 'em like they used to!
Can anyone make a chamois shirt [brand] recommendation?

I like LL Bean, a lot.
They also guarantee their product.
Sometimes you'll luck out and find one at a thrift store (Goodwill, church, etc)

I think they've always shrunk badly. You probably just bought it oversized, or the "tall" version all those years ago.

I used to love Woolrich clothing. But, I don't think it's made by the same company these days. I think it's been sold or licensed out and the quality has suffered as a result.
I use chamois and flannel shirts as "overshirts" during the colder months. In October and November, I wear them over a t-shirt. From December through the rest of winter, over long sleep t-shirts or mock turtlenecks. So, I need ones that hold up under heavy wear.
My current favorite chamois shirts are from Lands End. My favorite flannel shirts are from Moose Creek. I also choose the heavier weight fabric otherwise they tear too easily, shrink too easily and don't hold up to washing in a regular washing machine and dryer. I'd hang-dry them but my one bedroom apartment isn't suited for it.

The Duluth Trading Co catalog clothing is expensive but looks good. I haven't ordered from them so, I can't report on their quality.

I seem to recall woolrich chamois shirts having a high "shrinkage factor" even back in the olden days.

The last half dozen years I have bought my flannel and chamois shirts from L L Bean. They seem to have retained more quality and consistency in sizing even after washing than Woolrich or the ones I used to get from J C Penney. In the case of the J C Penney shirts they switched where they were made and shrinkage went way up. I have one that was bought as XXL, the same as I bought before, and it shrunk to smaller than some XL shirts I still had.

Another vote for LL Bean. I used to buy Woolrich shirts but over the last few years the quality seems to have gone down hill. The last order I got of about 4 different shirts all went back. The sizing was horrible and all of the shirts were hugh.
