speed reading - Fritz - 11-13-2011
my reading speed is painfully slow. Perhaps 2-300 wpm.
Getting thru the Sunday Times takes all day and that's juts reading the most interesting stuff.
Has anyone used any reading software to improve their reading and comprehension with success?
I've found 3 candidates.
Spreeder, Ace Reader, and ReallyEasy.

I am also reading a little slow, but I have an excuse (ESL). When I read in my native language, I think I read a little faster. Maybe I should time myself to see where I stand.

300 wpm is about a page per minute for the average paperback book.
That's not bad at all. The average adult can read at a rate around 200-250 wpm.
You'd read a 300 page book in 5 hours at 300 wpm.
That's better than most people I know.

I took one of those courses many years ago, although I can't remember which program it was.
It did increase my reading speed quite a bit, but that has fallen back since I didn't keep up with the practice.
I only found it to be moderately useful since it's not very good for highly technical or complex material. Maybe that's why I didn't keep up with it.

If you can stop saying the individual words in your mind, you can speed up your reading rate a great deal. That's not easy to do, but it can be done.
