Buy New MBP or Not? - IronMac - 12-06-2011

Hi all,

I have a bit of a dilemma here. Right now, I am in a position to pull the trigger on a new 15” MBP but I don’t know if I should or not.

The model I have is from 2010, i7 2.66 GHz and still under Applecare. It’s used primarily for work purposes so it’s a biz machine. I don’t need Lion nor do I really need more additional processing power. It’d be nice to have more room, more memory and so on but who doesn’t want that? The question is, should I get the latest equivalent machine while I can still get the best trade-in price for my MBP or should I wait another year?

Thanks!

If the machine is running fine, is stable, and meets your needs, I would stay put.

Buy more RAM, if your machine can handle it. Relatively cheap, definite upgrade.

I'm already maxed at 8 gigs. Sad

I'd love more memory! But, on the latest MBP it would be prohibitively expensive to max it to 16 gigs.

I made this move earlier this year. Loved my 2010 i7 MPB, but the new one is twice as fast and, as you point out, your current MBP will never be worth more than it is today. If you have the money, I'd say go for it.

And all of your software will work in Lion?

All depends on what you use your machine for. If it does what you need it to do, why spend the cash on an upgrade?

As cool as it would be to have an i7 MBP, the reality is this Core 2 Duo machine at 2.4GHz is really more than enough horsepower for 99% of what I do.

If you want to try out Lion, and iCloud, and a different form factor - get a MBA. See if you like it. That'll run you about the same cost as the proposed upgrade.

Wow, you folks must be all doing full-on video editing to need to upgrade hardware like that. I don't see how it would have any effect for almost any other type of work other than shrinking your savings.

My savings aren't suffering in any way.

How does going from a 2.66 i7 to a 2.4 i7 Double your speed? I truly don't understand.
