Just picked up iLife - question about iDVD 6 - JoeM - 06-06-2006

I'm going to put together a DVD of my recent trip to Paris photos. chas_m had a good suggestion about putting one together here (thanks chas_m): http://forums.macresource.com/read/1/112331/112445#msg-112445

The photos were shot on a Canon A95 @ 2592 x 1944 superfine JPG mode.

I'm wondering what resolution/size and format is best for viewing on TVs? My Samsung LNR328W HD LCD TV has a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels.

When viewing a burned CD of the photos thru my Akai DVD player and the LNR328W, I notice some jaggies on screen.

Anybody have suggestions or good links on this opic?

Thanks

Standard tv only displays 72 dpi. If you make the resolution larger, the pictures are just larger. At least, that's the way it works in FCP.

I tried changing the ppi from 180 (camera resolution) to 72 without resampling, then scaling down but there is a loss in image quality so that doesn't work.

I'm going to have to research this a bit before I make the DVD.

The best resolution you will ever get with a standard dvd/TV (known as HTSC) is 720 X 640 pixels. Anything greater will have to wait for HD DVD burner/player and be viewed on a HD TV.

iDVD will resize your photos automatically to the right resolution when it encodes the DVD. There is no way around the NTSC standard resolution until blueray or hdvd is standard. However, you may get a little better result by resizing and cropping the photos to 720 X 480 in photoshop. You can then adjust the sharpness better.

See the help file in iDVD for more tips.

BTW do not confuse the image size with the image print resolution. In video only the size matters not the resolution. The resolution in ppi only applies to printing.

I believe the "camera resolution" that you mention is only what print resolution that the file is stamped with and will not effect the file size.
