better compression algorithm promisses 10x smaller file sizes for images and video - space-time - 01-18-2012 The improved algorithm, which has not been named, could improve compression and transmission of compatible signals by as much as 10 times. http://techcrunch.com/2012/01/18/improvement-on-age-old-mathematical-principle-could-yield-improved-images-video/ Re: better compression algorithm promisses 10x smaller file sizes for images and video - cbelt3 - 01-18-2012 Woah. Math. Ow. :banghead: Dangit. I used to understand that stuff. I used to DO that stuff. Re: better compression algorithm promisses 10x smaller file sizes for images and video - Filliam H. Muffman - 01-18-2012 Interesting. I wonder how processor intensive this is compared to things like AAC. I recently read that only 1.8 minutes of 8k video will fit on a Blu-ray disc. I'll wait for it to be vetted before changing from jpg or mp3 Re: better compression algorithm promisses 10x smaller file sizes for images and video - cbelt3 - 01-18-2012 FWIW, it sounds processor intensive. But then again we used FPGA's back in the late 1980's to do FFT work for military applications. You know, back when Megahertz in processor speed was a big thing ? Re: better compression algorithm promisses 10x smaller file sizes for images and video - Racer X - 01-19-2012 The big question is whether it is processor intensive to compress, vs processor intense to decompress and display. I'm less concerned about compression time if it can display full screen full res decompressing on the fly without needing a hardware decoder. |
