Why is Smith Micro pushing MacKeeper? - ka jowct - 05-05-2012 Isn't this thing supposed to be at best nearly worthless and at worst something that fouls up your Mac and is hard to expunge once you've installed it? Here's a quote from Smith Micro's e-mail: "Do you love your Mac? We do. That is why we spent years of development to create MacKeeper. What is MacKeeper? MacKeeper is like 911 for your Mac. It's an easy way to manage routine tasks and keep your Mac secured, clean, reliable, fast and attended! What makes it so special? MacKeeper is a bundle of most important system utilities for performing different tasks on your Mac. It will rescue you from numerous apps and dozens of customer support centers! MacKeeper is Priceless It is worth 16 separate apps, but costs 13 times less." And some supposedly genuine 3rd party praise: MacKeeper is Proven It is a choice of respected organizations and software gurus. (Appletell) "ZeoBIT gives you the option of treating your computer's maintenance as a whole master duty that can be accomplished from a single application. I can't wait to see what they bring on within the next couple of months when important updates are announced." (TUAW) "MacKeeper does a whole lot and quite easily. It'd be worth it for cleanups alone, but add in scheduled backups, data encryption, file recovery (which helps recover accidentally deleted files) Smart Uninstaller and more, and you've got a heck of a nice application." ------------------- Just unsubscribed from their e-mail offerings. I must have been getting it because I owned Stuffit back when it was developed by a decent company. Re: Why is Smith Micro pushing MacKeeper? - space-time - 05-05-2012 easy way to make a quick buck. So they have become a handy storefront for a number of other developers. Just a quick buck and a company that is losing its ethics in the process. Re: Why is Smith Micro pushing MacKeeper? - Grateful11 - 05-05-2012 I hate that pop under ad. MacKeeper doesn't even show up MacUpdate. Kind of sad, because back in the day, Aladdin made a couple of decent products and I used StuffIt on all my systems. I have a nice Aladdin T-shirt around here somewhere that I bought at MWNY. I don't object to the other stuff they push, even though most of it is of no interest to me. Sometimes they offer deals on software that you might actually want to use, like VMWare Fusion. But this shameless pimping of MacKeeper indicates an "anything for a buck" mentality. Re: Why is Smith Micro pushing MacKeeper? - RAMd®d - 05-05-2012 MacKeeper had the best Booth Babes and lots of them at Macworld this year. But that's as much interest as I have for them. That popunder drives me nuts too, and even if it was a *decent* product, I wouldn't buy it do to the cheesy marketing. Re: Why is Smith Micro pushing MacKeeper? - DP - 05-05-2012 MacDefender is the nasty one. MacKeeper is like Cocktail. There is even a special script used to remove the many tentacles of MacKeeper that are embedded when installing it. I don't care how much they spend on advertising and popup ads it is a piece of crap IMHO. More accurate to say that MacKeeper is a like a Cocktail made with methanol instead of ethanol. Re: Why is Smith Micro pushing MacKeeper? - LaserKun - 05-05-2012 I will NEVER buy any product that advertises the way they do - even it weren't junk like MacKeeper... Actually, I make it a point to never click on ANY ads in web sites. I usually buy from Amazon, MacSales (OWC), etc. direct, not because of a web site ad. We do not need it. |
