hollow door with closer - pbarra1 - 05-05-2012 Door leading from garage to living space is a hollow steel door. I want to install an automatic door closer on it. Is the steel sheathing strong enough to allow for a door closer? I know the first couple of inches of door probably has a solid wood frame but the first hole I drilled was hollow. Then find one that is the size you need. Probably 3.5" X 3.5". Fred Re: hollow door with closer - M>B> - 05-05-2012 You can get a replacement hinge pin with a automatic closer... ![]() http://www.homedepot.com/buy/doors-windows/door-accessories/everbuilt/spring-hinge-pin-bright-brass-75048.html Simple, cheap and you might need more than one for a steel door. Re: hollow door with closer - Mike Johnson - 05-05-2012 The hinge thingies work, but you may need two or three of them. If I were using one of those pneumatic jobbies, I'd use sheet metal screws plus some sort of weak adhesive: carpet tape, superglue, 3M 77. I would not use a strong adhesive like epoxy or 5200 because those bastards need frequent replacing. Re: hollow door with closer - artie67 - 05-06-2012 Check the local code for fire doors. I use the spring closers that M>B> shows for my french doors and they work great. But, this is on a fire code area in your garage. Fire code doors usually have a filler and baffles inside. Run bolts from the inside and get a proper coded closer to it right. Do not put in anything that is not fire coded with your insurance. Do it once correctly and relax. Do they actually have enough spring tension to close and latch the door with the strike plate? Re: hollow door with closer - pbarra1 - 05-06-2012 Guys - The door is too heavy for that hinge pin spring at HD. Re: hollow door with closer - Racer X - 05-06-2012 I have a solid wood door with fiberglass facing as my garage fire door. It has self closing hinges with the torsion spring built in. I think there are 3 hinges. You don't need an ugly external arm and failure-prone piston on a heavy door. The hinge springs have an adjustment. Mine just barely swing the door closed and it latches if you let go. |
