Killed my First Gen Intel iMac - chopper - 05-05-2012

Decided to try and swap the hard drive in my early Intel iMac, white, 4,1 today. Followed two vids by Small Dog on Youtube and got it back together fairly easy but it fires up nothing on the screen. Took it back apart, and on re-start it flashed the lights, checked and re-checked ram placement. Got it to re-start but nothing on the screen.

Took it back apart, put the old drive in.

Start it up, fan goes full on ... can hear the drive spinning but still nothing.

More frustrating than anything. As has been pointed out here previously, it is a $200 computer but I was hoping to get some more life from it.

Did you remember to replug the little black wire in the front?

yeah, double check all your connections, particularly any monitor related.

I've done similar procedures and found that webpage based tutorials are far superior, and videos tend to leave out steps. It sounds like you've forgotten to reattach a few things. Fans on full means the hard drive heat sensor is either not stuck to the drive, or detached at its harness.

I've connected every single connection that I can think of that I pulled apart. I've looked over and over trying to see a lose conection or dangling wire to no avail.

If there is a picture step by step of conecting the LCD that anyone knows about please share.

It's my old iMac 4,1. 20 inch white.

Was a good machine until I started working on it. Ha!
