Another problem with new Safari search - celliott - 07-27-2012

Since they have combined the search window with the URL window (or what ever you call it) it now takes a few more key strokes to get where you want to go.

We used to be a able to enter a url without the ".com" to get you there. For example I just wanted to go to "NBC" to check on the Olympic coverage. In the old Safari I just entered NBC and Safari filled in the .com and took me there. Can't do that anymore. When I enter NBC- it did a Google search for NBC. If I want to go to NBC website I have to enter NBC.com.

A minor thing I suppose but I'd really gotten used to not entering the .com. Why do we have to combine the two? Seems a backward step for me. If I want to search for something I have no problem going to a search window. 1 step forward and 2 steps back.

Well put. It is a loss of function. We all have the ability to tell this kind of thing to Apple.

Just fill in the blanks. Choose your words carefully. Note that this is not for problems you are having/need help with. It is for reporting the loss of features/functions, such as your criticism, or the loss of color in Finder and Mail tool bars, the loss of Save As in many apps' drop-down menus under File.

I've been annoyed at Firefox for doing the same exact behavior.

However, the autofill for .com is still there in Safari 6 but unfortunately you have to arrow all the way down the list in order to invoke it.

Go to Site "nbc"

Might as well type .com instead.

Totally agree. I have been entering just the central keyword since System days. This is a backwards step meant to appease the unwashed windows-y masses.

Grr...

Set the keyword.enabled attribute to false.

The unified URL/search bar has been popularized by Google for Chrome.

It has the handy side effect of funneling search traffic and query data to Google.

It's also useful for novices who can concentrate on only on a single area to enter all addresses and search terms. Protocol hiding and domain highlighting are the next step to this dumbing down of the typical browser.

For those who know what they're doing, and appreicate the difference between performing a search, and entering a URL, it can be frustrating.
