Stem casters, again... - PeterB - 09-07-2012

... I'm pretty sure I've asked for help with these here before, but here goes...

Have a few of these chrome wire racks that don't have wheels, for which I'd like to put on casters. The stem thread appears to be 1/4" ... I can't seem to find (at least on Grainger's site) the right casters to go. Obviously cheap is good, and I'd like to go with the typical twin wheel type, if I can... anyone know where to find these at a decent price?

Might try McMaster-Carr http://www.mcmaster.com/#stem-mount-casters/=j6s2kg

Re: Stem casters, again... - PeterB - 09-07-2012

Thanks 'fil, but it seems the 1/4" thread size is kinda hard to find...

This the original manufacturer of wire shelving...

Might be overkill!

"The stem thread appears to be 1/4"

Does "appears" mean you actually measured it with calipers or eyeballed it with a ruler ?
They might actually be 5/16". Other option is to drill the holes out a 1/16"

Re: Stem casters, again... - artie67 - 09-07-2012

Most likely they are 5/16". Check out Outwater Plastics

You pick out the wheel and the stem combo you want.

Re: Stem casters, again... - testcase - 09-07-2012

A 1/4" diameter would usually mean a 1/4 x 20 thread. Super common. Home Depot / Lowes / Menards etc don't have casters with that thread?

a quick Google search enter:

"1/4" x 20 thread caster"

LOTS of caster choices.

If they truly are Metro shelves, you should be able to call metro directly, or any local restaurant equipment supply company and order casters that will fit (a good shop will even have them on the shelf, ready to go, as they are the industry standard).

Otherwise, check Franklin out. It's where I turn when I need parts.

Thanks guys, and yes, they really are 1/4 ... took to a local hardware shop to measure, and no, Lowes didn't have any casters that fit.
