shopping for new camera backpack - mattkime - 09-27-2012

I'm shopping for a new pack for my camera gear and i'm not sure where to start - I think B&H has left me high and dry on this one. I have a Lowepro bag thats indestructible but its torture compared to my nice deuter backpacks. Lowepro's recent attempts appear incompetent imho.

I'd rather start with a nice pack and make it photo capable - good access to gear, some padding for protection, and the ability to carry a tripod. The main features I want from a normal pack are a nice back/support system and space for a camelback bladder.

As for the camera gear - a dSLR with a couple of nice lenses. nothing too fancy.

I'm fairly certain that other photographers have gone down this route but i'm unsure where to find their solutions.

I just recently bought a Kata 3N-1 backpack and it's been great. Reasonable priced and really well made. I always thought camera backpacks were kinda geeky but after using it for one day I wouldn't trade it for anything. I have a few other bags but I almost always take this one. It comes in 3 sizes. I originally bought the mediunm size but returned it for the large one. Kata

I think the main problem with the sling backpacks that are designed to be for camera gear, is that they only have one strap. This means that even when they have a waist strap, all of the weight is on one shoulder, and very little on the hip.

With the Kata you can use one or both straps, it has 2 for a full backpack, the other strap is tucked away. I usually use the sling but on a couple long outings I used the full 2 straps with the waist thingy.

I picked up one of these a couple of months ago. For the price - its tough to beat.

I use it to carry my two Canon bodies with lenses, 3 extra lenses and assorted camera gear. Not a big fan of the yellow interior, but again, you can't beat the price.
