What asset managers are people using? - ka jowct - 07-01-2006

Adobe Bridge only?

Bridge plus something else?

I have Portfolio 7 and would like to use it to catalog my RAW files in addition to the other stuff I've cataloged, but so far, I can't get it to create previews from the RAW files. A RAW filter patch is supposed to enable Portfolio to work with files from my camera.

So what are you using that you like? (Except iPhoto; I'm interested in more robust solutions.)

Charles Schwab.

Oh.

Nevermind.

Portfolio 8 can read my D200's NEFs, but not with thumbnails or previews representing the adjustments/metadata/keywords I've made in Camera Raw that are contained in the XMP sidecar files (at least I haven't figured out how to do this yet). I've been converting all the NEFs to DNG after I've adjusted them, added metadata and keywords thru ACR and Bridge, and then cataloging them with Portfolio--it picks up the previews embedded in the DNGs which do represent the adjustments, along with the metadata etc. I did the same with RAF raw files converted to DNG from my Fuji S2.

So the short of it is that I use Portfolio, but primarily after having converted the raw files to DNG format.

iView Media Pro

As long as you're shopping around, take a look at QPict, too. There's a demo.

QPict looks nice, I downloaded the demo and plan to give it a try. I just started looking for a replacement to iView since the news that Microsoft purchased them.

laarree, it sounds like my next move should be to convert to DNG and see if things work any better in Portfolio 7.

I can think of many better uses for $100 than upgrading to Portfolio 8 simply to accomodate the (rapidly growing) collection of RAW files. DNG is the recommended final format in Real World Camera RAW, so there would be plenty of reason to go this route.

What I have read on the Extensis site about Portfolio 7 and RAW FIlter 2 indicated that I ought to be getting previews, but I'm not.

I will check out Qpict, however.

Ka Jowct, if you're using Adobe Camera Raw and Bridge and you are concerned with making adjustments to your photos and adding metadata and keywords to them, that stuff does not get embedded into the Raw files themselves--just into XMP files. If you convert to DNG, the stuff that's stored in the XMP files becomes part of the DNG file itself, along with an embedded JPEG preview (which can be full size if you wish). I archive my Raw files with their XMP sidecar files to DVD, and keep the DNGs that I've made from them on a hard drive so I can continue to play with the images. I catalog all of that stuff with Portfolio 8.

Is it better than one of the other asset managers? Don't know -- I haven't used iView Media Pro, and I have lots of stuff (not just photos) backed up to DVD and cataloged with Portfolio since version 4, and Portfolio handles just about any file format you can throw at it.

If you haven't seen it yet, go look at Peter Krogh's "The DAM Book: Digital Asset Management for Photographers". Its website is http://www.thedambook.com/

I've done little more than flip thru its pages, but it seems rich in info about these issues.

laarree, you seem to be channeling Bruce Fraser. He converts his RAW files to DNG for long-term storage and archiving for the reasons you mention; and he points out that we cannot be certain how long RAW formats from various camera manufacturers will be accessible. DNG, developed by a major software vendor (or possibly a bloated software overlord in the making), has a better chance of being around for a while.

I respect Bruce Fraser alot -- I've got at least a couple of his books, including "Real World Camera Raw with Adobe Photoshop CS2", but I learned the basics of this stuff from one of his good buddies, Seth Resnick, who gives a very useful workshop on raw workflow called D-65 which I attended a couple of summers ago. http://www.d-65.com/ People who've attended his workshop can afterwards join his mailing list, which is basically a neverending dialog among innumerable photographers about workflow, asset managing, backup and archiving, and all that crucial stuff that former film-shooters need to have under their belt, another very useful resource.
