What's Holding On to the Extra OS 9 Folder? - MysteryGuest - 07-02-2006

I had an extra OS 9 folder that was originally the one selected in Classic preferences. This was on the partition dedicated to OS 9. Let's just say that when I installed Panther, I envisioned myself spending a lot of time booted into OS 9. Well, we all know that didn't happen.

Eventually I switched Classic prefs to the 9 folder on the same partition as X. Then I started getting rid of 9 versions of applications I'd upgraded. Now I need space, so I want to delete that extra 9 folder.

But something has a death grip on two ColorSync profiles and won't let go! I suspected Quark 4, but even if I quit the program and Classic, the mystery grip on these profiles won't let me delete the extra system folder. Any ideas what could be using them?

Nope, but you could try this:
Open up the Terminal, type 'sudo rm' then drag whatever you want to delete in(Like Colorsync profile A), then press enter, it'll ask you for your password then delete it.

Be careful though, because with rm, it's gone. No friendly Trash can or Recycle bin, it's Gone.

Another way that usually works is if you can put the files in the trash and restart. It won't hold them then and you can usually delete them at that time.

Thanks, Dennis. That worked. Funny how I've gotten out of the habit of thinking about restarting.

Microchip, as an OS X toddler, I don't think I should be fooling around in Terminal, but thanks.
