Considering the state of the UK's libel laws, this is a pretty mild form of insanity.

It's no secret that the U.K. is one of the hardest places to enforce IP rights in general and patent rights in particular. Their standards for patent validity are extremely high (they have been chastised for deviating too much from European Patent Office's interpretation of the European Patent Convention).
Frankly, it looks like Apple basically said, "who cares what the courts in this podunk, borderline-irrelevant, island nation rule?"
The court then responded as any judicial body that has been insulted would.

Perhaps, then again, Apple hasn't been terribly successful in their lawsuits, barring the Samsung victory in the USA of course.

Ha! Funny, but true. As much money as Apple is raking in, they probably feel it was worth the price of admission to tell em to feck off. Got a good laugh at poking fun at the idiocy of the UK court system with their "apology" and likely knew it was coming. It's good to be the King... even if you gotta deal with the Queen every so often.
