Kernel Panic. can you help? - space-time - 11-16-2012

I leave MBP always ON to run a script, screen OFF. This evening I found it unresponsive, so I had to force a restart. Then I got a report, I wonder if there is anything meaningful in it. If someone know how to decipher these logs, I would really appreciate the feedback. Please feel free to send PM or post.

Was anything plugged into USB at the time? HD? Flash drive?

nope. even Apple USB keyboard was out.

Are you sure?

The panic reports a Logitech device:
USB Receiver, 0x046d (Logitech Inc.)

hmm, you're right. I thought I had unplugged that, but maybe not. Would a defective USB device be able to bring down a modern OS like OS X?

It doesn't have to be defective. It could be a driver issue or it could be a fluke. Nothing pointed to the Logitech device, just that the USB controller driver was that last thing "touched" before the panic. There is also a call to the file system driver right there.

My normal guess would have been a DOS formatted flash drive, but none was plugged in. So it could be any USB device (trackpad, facetime camera, mic, bluetooth) or a bluetooth device too I guess. Realistically if it's only happened once, you may not need to do anything. If it keeps happening, keep the logs for someone to look at...take it to the genius bar. While most of them can't read the panic report, they can package them and transmit them to corporate for a possible diagnosis.
