iPhone 5 on Straight Talk Now Official - miK. - 01-12-2013

For those interested, it's official, and sales started today, including Walmart's financing of the phone(s).
Interesting that some first reports are showing it on Verizon's network (where ST has historically been
on ATT and TMo's).

Dang, I wish I had gone that route for the unlimited data rather than AT$T.

Yep, this is a very good thing. There have been lots of options for iPhones on AT&T, but this is a great option for those needing or wanting to use Verizon.

hate to state the obvious but what about Gay Talk.....???

Re: iPhone 5 on Straight Talk Now Official - Rolando - 01-12-2013

It's a good plan for a solo phone. I have my 3 iPhones (2 under contract) and 2 dumbphones on my Family plan for ~$250/month.

Re: iPhone 5 on Straight Talk Now Official - CJsNvrUrly - 01-12-2013

My iPhone 4 contract with Verizon expires next month. I've resigned myself to going back to USCellular at that time because I'm the only one on the Verizon plan and it's just too expensive for me to upgrade to iPhone 5 and continue alone. My husband and daughter are on a shared USCellular plan and don't want to switch to Verizon. I priced both shared plans and it's much less expensive for USCellular. We've always been happy with their service. If I go back to USCellular (which I was on until I just "had" to get an iPhone), I figured I'd get the Samsung Galaxy III S. Now, this Walmart/Straight Talk plan comes along and I don't know what to do. Is Straight Talk any good?

I decided to move away from Verizon this last fall when my kid got off the family payroll. I was very tempted to go to Straight Talk, but my online searches found a number of complaints. Of course, you'll find complaints about any particular place/service/whatever. But, the complaints had a pretty common theme--when things go well, it's fine. But, if things do not go right, they go downhill very fast. One of the more common complaints related to porting numbers. Since I really wanted to keep my number, I didn't chance it. Instead I went to Page Plus because of one of our members here who has said how great it's been. And it has been great. The current issue on Page Plus is the ability to bring an iPhone 5 to Page Plus. People are reporting that they can jump through a variety of hoops and bring one over, but at 3G speeds. The Verizon iPhone 4 and 4s phones apparently work fine. The assumption is that Verizon will ultimately allow the iPhone 5 "officially" on Page Plus, but the timing is unknown.

Here's one complaint about Straight Talk: http://consumerist.com/2012/01/06/solving-a-problem-with-straighttalk-is-not-all-that-straightforward/

(Edit: left a rather important word out!)

Great news for me since I just ruined one Straight Talk SIM yesterday trying to cut it down to nano size. Oh well, like me, a day late and a dollar short. We still have this new iPhone 5 that has never been used! I got wife for Christmas planning to leave ATT for ST since contract just expired. Thanks for this news miK.

Hmmm, I checked out the links, and still no information on how to get the nana SIM card. That really seems to be the main hurdle of using iPhone 5 on ST - cutting the micro SIM to nano size. Like I said, I already tried that one time... I can tell you that the thickness of the SIM card is not an issue - it fit in iPhone 5 with no problem, and would have worked, if I had cut the thing right. The template I downloaded did not work for me to cut it.

All depends on what you want.

I have had it since I got back in August. Can't think of any major or even minor issues.

Texting, data and calls work. I don't use a lot of data. Supposedly, you are safe up to 2 GB a month. I don't use anywhere near that. Speed is not that fast, i.e. not 4G/LTE speed on my iPhone 5, but fast enough for me (DSL speeds).

No visual voice mail, but I rarely use my portable computer to make calls. Wink

They use AT&T's towers (and T-Mobile's?) so if you have no AT&T coverage, that's something to think about. No problem near Lynchburg, but it may be different in Bedford.

Yeah, I think mine was a little too small after I trimmed it, but it has been working perfectly since Thursday! No thickness issues for me either.

Update on my "ruined" sim - I watched one more YouTube video, trimmed my sim and it is working!
