SSD for iMac Core 2 Duo (2006) - john dough - 01-15-2013 A client wants to pass on an older iMac for his son and he was concerned about the longevity of that computer. Since he has not used it in over a year (he turned it on this morning and it booted without issue) and has not used it very much since 2010, I think that most parts have little use and should last a while. That said, he asked about an SSD and which one would work well in that model. The HD interface is SATA I but I know that a SSD would be faster than his current HD…right? Anyhow, are there any SSDs to avoid with that model? I read that the SanDisk Extreme is finicky with some Macs and I want to open that machine once (if at all possible). Re: SSD for iMac Core 2 Duo (2006) - rz - 01-15-2013 There's a Samsung 120GB SSD on dealmac today for $100. It's gotten good reviews. Another good one is the Crucial M4, same price range (don't get the V4 though, it gets crappy ratings). And if you want to spend a little more, there's always the OWC model. I have a 2006 C2D Macbook that I'm about ready to upgrade to SSD. Keep hoping the OWC model will come down a little in price, but it hasn't come down in several months. Re: SSD for iMac Core 2 Duo (2006) - sekker - 01-15-2013 Pretty much any reputable brand should work well. I think Crucial, Intel, Samsung, OWC - all would be good choices and would make an amazing difference in usability for that machine. And yes, the client will be very pleased with it after the upgrade. You can make your Mac to boot from SSD and let the other drive (original hard drive) attach with the Mac as secondary storage device. Not really practical on this mac as the fastest external bus is USB2, which I find fine for backups but wouldn't put my "storage" HDD on. Re: SSD for iMac Core 2 Duo (2006) - tenders - 01-15-2013 I think you would find the internal SATA port quite satisfactory and very speedy for this. I am using my 2006 Mini with an internal SSD to great utility -- and that's a PATA interface. Re: SSD for iMac Core 2 Duo (2006) - clay - 01-15-2013 Black wrote: what about firewire? Re: SSD for iMac Core 2 Duo (2006) - Black - 01-15-2013 clay wrote: what about firewire? External FW800 works great for SSD booting (I do it on 2 macs) but you do know that Firewire 400 is technically slower than USB2, right? It would probably be the better choice than USB2 if you had no other option, and a FW400 enclosure and cable handy.... but this is getting far, far away from anything the OP asked. |
