PSA: Driving to Canada ? Have a DUI in your record somwehere ? Soorrry. You're not coming in. - cbelt3 - 01-15-2013

A coworker experienced this recently on a business trip. Travel was unaware that he had an 'expunged' DUI on his record. He was unaware that 'expunged' does NOT mean 'expunged' from Homeland security records. Which are shared with their Brethren in the Great White North.

So he had to get a bus ride home from Buffalo, was very embarassed, and professionally lost a number of brownie points.

Oh, and any other conviction record that might be anything other than a misdemeanor IN CANADA , expunnged or not ?

Take off, Hoser !

So, does Canada forbid their own citizens from driving for life if they've had a DUI?

A single DUI conviction is not grounds to deny entry into the U.S; however, multiple DUI convictions or a DUI conviction in combination with other misdemeanor offenses can make a person inadmissible and require a waiver prior to entering the United States.

cbelt,

Am I misreading something? It sounds like the coworker wasn't aware he had an expunged DUI on his record. Or, am I supposed to read it as the travel department of the business was unaware the coworker had an expunged DUI on his record and didn't account for it when preparing the travel plans? I'm assuming the latter.

Robert

Usually 'expunged' means that it is no longer part of your record..ie. it never happened officially. Apparently when your 6th grade teacher said "I hope you know that this will go down on your permanent record" he wasn't lying.

Wow, that's pretty amazing. People are not even allowed entry into Canada if they've had a DUI, let alone drive there.

I do not have a problem with people who've had even more serious offenses from entering the United States. I'm even okay with allowing people with felony type convictions to enter depending upon circumstances.

Robert-
He thought 'expunged' meant 'expunged'. Apparently that is not the case when it comes to border crossings. Welcome to your Permanent Record.

I should get a commendation for conspicuous self-restraint in return for my not posting any Trailer Park Boys quotes to this thread.
