WACO, Texas — Inmates at one Central Texas jail will no longer have access to microwave ovens.
They were removed Monday from the McLennan County Jail.
County commissioners last summer refused to allot $85,000 for upgrading the jail's wiring after microwaves overloaded the electrical system.
Sheriff Parnell McNamara says the 47 microwaves posed a safety risk because some inmates have thrown hot liquids on others.
McNamara also says they were an unwarranted luxury for those accused of violating the law.
The microwaves were bought with proceeds from the jail's commissary fund -- not with taxpayer dollars. Each was shared by two dozen inmates and used under jailer supervision.
The microwaves were removed Monday. A handful will remain at the jail for trustee inmates, who do laundry, cleaning and cooking.

This just in: jail sucks, even with a microwave.

That's a jail, not a prison. There's a big difference.

Free anal sex, too! Where is the punitive aspect?

How dare people accused of violating the law ask for warm food?!

newsflash: If you want choices, freedom and access to luxuries, don't commit crimes.

Texas prisons are very popular with 179,241 residents (2010 stats), more than any other state. Maybe it's the excellent cuisine.

I take the Sheriff's statement as a basis to assume his guests haven't received their day in court. Seems they are incarcerated because they could not afford bail or perhaps were denied bail.

Reminds me of that Federal Facility our President promised to shut down so many years ago :patriot:
