PSA: US rice imports 'contain harmful levels of lead - haikuman - 04-11-2013

Analysis of commercially available rice imported into the US has revealed it contains levels of lead far higher than regulations suggest are safe.

Some samples exceeded the "provisional total tolerable intake" (PTTI) set by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) by a factor of 120.

The report at the American Chemical Society Meeting adds to the already well-known issue of arsenic in rice.

The FDA told the BBC it would review the research.

Lead is known to be harmful to many organs and the central nervous system.

It is a particular risk for young children, who suffer significant developmental problems if exposed to elevated lead levels.

Because rice is grown in heavily irrigated conditions, it is more susceptible than other staple crops to environmental pollutants in irrigation water.

At least only 7% of rice is imported into the US.

Yeah, but much of the rice comes from the Sacramento area. The wetlands area that I use to go to all the time was a part of the region. Twice I saw federal agency types out there testing the water.

Asked one of them what he was up to. Asked him what he thought of the proposed fishing limitations (one or two a week, none for pregnant women - something like that) and he said that he wouldn't eat anything that came from the area.

Why not?

Mercury and Arsenic (from mining)...

So perhaps it's one of those "Choose your poison" situations....

But I suppose that eating rice from the area is very different from eating fish from the area... but still...

All rice should be rinsed carefully before cooking and cooked with additional water to lower the lead levels (or so I read). Not sure how cooking with additional water would help.

Spent a very large part of my life eating Calrose Brown Rice .
Then much later imported Jasmine Rice from Thailand.
Currently eating several varieties of Brown Rice here in the Philippines some of it
Organically grown.

Growing up in the San Gabriel Valley through the 50's and 60's I likely
inhaled enough lead and carbon monoxide to kill a horse.

I admit I may already be a mutant *(:>*

I agree Frank all rice should be rinsed ~!~
Although I am very strict about the water to rice ratio.
It has always been 2 cups of water or a little less for 1 cup of brown rice.

because the solution to pollution is dilution?

Well, technically.. Yes. Of course reduction of toxins produces that effect when volume is limited.

Hmmmm,
Rice from Hunan is boycotted in China:

China is IMPORTING 4 times as much rice than they need:
http://www.alt-market.com/articles/1270-china-mysteriously-quadruples-rice-imports-continues-to-stockpile-commodities

and China is also EXPORTING rice.
Apparently contaminated rice.

Hmmmmm.

Thanks for the link Billb
"And rice elsewhere has been found to be contaminated with lead and cadmium due to irrigation with industrial wastewater, according to recent reports."

"they irrigate their crops with raw sewage effluent and untreated industrial effluent," Lead researcher Dr. Tsanangurayi Tongesayi of Monmouth University told the BBC."
