Amanda Berry disappeared aged 16 in 2003, while Gina DeJesus went missing at the age of 14 a year later.
The women were found in a house in the city of Cleveland, along with a third woman, Michele Knight, who also vanished years ago, police confirmed.
A 52-year-old suspect has been arrested in connection with the case.
Cleveland police said the women, who were taken to hospital, are in good health. At least one of the women is reported to have a baby.
Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson said: "I am thankful that Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight have been found alive.
"We have many unanswered questions regarding this case and the investigation will be ongoing."
Ms Berry was last heard from when she called her sister to say she would get a lift home from work at a Burger King restaurant.
In 2004, Ms DeJesus was said to be on her way home from school when she went missing.
Their cases were re-opened last year when a prison inmate tipped authorities that Ms Berry may have been buried in Cleveland. He received a four-and-a-half years in prison for the false information.

The BBC article links to the local TV news which interviewed Charles, the rescuer. If you haven't seen it yet, you will, over and over again. it's going to be everywhere. Holy cow.

Ugh - just read this is the Cleveland newspaper, about the suspect (or one of the suspects, I think there may be more)
"A June 2004 story that appeared in a West Side neighborhood newspaper was written by someone named Ariel Castro and described the community’s anxiety since the disappearance of DeJesus and Berry.
The author interviewed DeJesus’ mother, Nancy Ruiz, and a group of parents waiting for their children to be released from Wilbur Wright Middle School. They spoke of the need for greater security and the fear that had settled upon the neighborhood.
“For seven weeks, Gina’s family has been organizing searches, holding prayer vigils, posting fliers and calling press conferences,” Castro wrote. “Despite the many tips and rumors that have been circulating in the neighborhood, there has been no sign of her. One thing is for certain, however. Almost everyone feels a connection with the family, and Gina’s disappearance has the whole area talking.”

Murder is not always the most heinous crime. Sometimes, torture would actually be too kind to the perpetrator. This sounds like it may be the case. Whatever punishment he gets, I hope he suffers for the rest of his miserable life.

Local news says three brothers in their 50's are under arrest. The first victim was taken in 2002. Several children were found , one is the daughter of a girl taken at 14 in 2003. Horrible, but a joyous ending because they are all alive.

BTW.. am I the only one who is thinking "Rape of the Sabine women" ? These ladies have to get major counseling for the rest of their lives. Adam Walsh is giving excellent advice ... don't talk to the media, get COUNSELING.
