Useless Poll: Guess prices for new Mac Pro - Psurfer - 05-07-2013

May be less guesswork than guessing release date...
I'll say "starting at $2799", and then going way up from there.

They need to drop Xeons. Start them at $1499.

Agreed, and the funky ECC memory slots/requirements.

Good Case: $150
Good Mobo: $200
Good CPU: $200
Good RAM: $200
Good GPU: $200
Good SSD: $150
Good HDD: $100
Good PSU: $75
Good DVD: $25

That's $1300 at retail pricing. I'm sure Apple will deliver a nicer package, but really there's no need for a base machine to cost more than that. Such a machine would be smokin' fast for most pro uses.

The challenge is always to offer a computer in an entirely different class than the iMac yet still have it be somewhat affordable to get on board for people who think they need it.

EDIT:

MAVIC - I agree but the thing with Apple as we all know, is that "Good" is not good enough. Most of the time it has to be custom made.

I think the base model will basically be a Pro Mac Mini...relying on thunderbolt for expansion, rather than lots of internal expansion options. So, I think the base model will still use Xeon chips and start in the $2299 range, maybe have room for 2 internal 2.5" drives (no optical), maybe 1 PCI slot, non-standard GPU form factor (i.e. soldered on the logic board, or otherwise basically non-upgradeable), hopefully at least 4 RAM slots. It'll be about twice the height of the mac mini, and possibly use the same form factor. Hopefully at least 2 thunderbolt ports (4 would be great), 4 USB 3 ports, 2 ethernet ports, 2 FW 800 ports.

Then, the kicker is that they'll start selling thunderbolt expansion add-ons. Those will start at $1k, so the real price for these machines is really whatever the base price is + one of these expansion bays.

:agree:

While it is pretty clear what the majority of potential Mac desktop customers want, Apple has recently been demonstrating--more so than usual it seems--that they intend to give customers what Apple wants not what their customers want.

But without Xeons there won't be any dual processor configs, and without dual processor configs there is no immediate advantage over the processing power available in an iMac or MacMini. I am guessing they are waiting for the supply of the latest Xeons to ramp up so they don't have this overlap area in the product lineup, and the recently ability to use certain PC Branded nVidia GPUs on 10.8.3 is a concession to the current Video Pros who really need to leverage CUDA in apps like After Effects and Premiere.

Sure there are. There are plenty of single-procs out there that outperform what's in the iMac and MacMinis. Plus there the availability of more/faster RAM, faster mobos, better GPUs... all of which would help a single proc Mac Pro stand out. Plus there would be more expansion options - eg more HDs which would also help a single proc Mac Pro stand out.

Photoshop still isn't 100% multi-core aware, so multi-core CPUs have no benefit, let a lone multi-proc systems.
