Does that Paint with Primer work? - Microman - 07-16-2013

I know we tried to paint a room, without primer once, and had to use two coats of the COLOR to make it look good.

But, how does this PRIMER and PAINT all in one, stuff work. Anyone used it?

Thanks.

Depends on the color underneath.

We still needed 2 coats.

Are you talking about 'one coat paint' ?

It really depends on the condition (and color) of the wall at the start. 80% of painting is surface prep and taping, etc..

I've used one coat paints quite successfully, but on walls that were already painted a neutral white with a primer and then one or two coats of color (good builder.. cheap builder sprays one coat of off white II and walks away laughing).

If you've got a cheap builder wall, Kilz II is an amazing primer that solves most ills. If you've got a badly stained wall or some weird stuff, Kilz I or Glidden Gripz is awesome. Then you can use the 'one coat paint'. Otherwise, you're gonna have a bad time.

Do the primer. Voice of sad experience here--you may end up doing more coats than you ever imagined, otherwise.

And how about for bare wood molding you might want to paint white? Will paint +primer all in one do it in one shot?

Do the primer, something like Kilz Premium and get good quality paint. Our handyman has spent more
time than I care to think about at our home over the last couple years and this new Paint & Primer is
crap. We have a Den that still feels like it was painted 2 or 3 days ago even though it was painted last Fall.
He used Kilz Primer and then 2 coats of Valspar paint & primer combo that we picked out at Lowe's and
it's still tacky feeling. He just finished our bathroom and again he primed with Kilz Premium water base
primer and this time we bought Benjamin Moore paint from Ace at about $65/gallon made specifically for bathrooms
and it's dried fine and looks great. No more cheap paint for us. We also tried Olympic from Lowe's that
was paint only on some trim and it also will not cure out correctly. The old Valspar that Lowe's had without
the primer in it was pretty good paint. The new stuff is BS, you'll likely need 3 coats if just use the paint &
primer combo and good luck getting it to dry.

Grateful,

My wife and I used Benjamin-Moore Regal Select and Benjamin-Moore Aura Bath and Spa paint in our new apartment. Both of these are primer/paint combination products. Aura Bath and Spa was used in each of the bathrooms and in the kitchen. Regal Select was used everywhere else. Neither product could cover the previous mustard yellow paint in a single coat. In some areas two coats didn't do the job. Three coats did it.

I voiced concerned about the issue and he said that depending on the walls (new construction) or a particular dark color, even a coat of primer and one or two coats of either of the above paints wouldn't have done the trick and the brand/type of paint wouldn't make a difference. So, in the future, if my wife and I decide to paint again, I'm going to assume we'll need at least two coats, possibly three. And that's despite painting the apartment white and pale yellow. (It looks awesome!)

Robert

Well crap Grateful. We just put the third coat of Valspar on our bathroom remodel walls. Now you have me concerned. Second coat dried with lines where the roller went which is why we put on a third. Drying now...

Of course it works. It just costs more.

nope it's BS... designed to sell more paint to the un-initiated public.

Buy a good quality primer and the best quality paint you can afford. Do not buy your paint from the Big Box Store go where the Pro's go...

The big difference between the "value" line paints and the top of the line stuff is the amount of solids/pigment that is in the paint.

The top of the line paint generally has 3-5 times more solids by volume as the cheap stuff, that is why it covers better, has a better finished appearance and is more durable over time.

Don't skimp on the paint!!
