Breaking Bad, S5E10 [spoilers] - Black - 08-19-2013

Did anyone watch? Seemed like a short episode somehow-- was surprised when it ended. I didn't quite catch what was going on at the underground meth lab, who killed who and why, etc.
You could hear the sound of slowing momentum IMO (as compared to previous episode...)

Alan Sepinwall usually has a pretty good analysis of Breaking Bad (among other shows)

Lydia, meanwhile, is still the aggravating neurotic we first met last summer — she's once again wearing the wrong shoes for the occasion, even if they're matched this time — but she's picked up lessons from both Mike and Walt, and has decided to have Todd, his Uncle Jack and Jack's crew kill Declan (who took over distribution of the blue meth after Mike's "retirement," and who's been running the whole operation since Walt quit) and take over the cook. This is a more dangerous Lydia than before, and a pretty nasty crew she's linked up with; if I had to take a guess this week about whom the machine gun and the ricin are for — and I suspect this guess will be changing weekly from now til the end — I'd say the former is for Uncle Jack's guys, the latter for Lydia. There's a major sense of weariness and regret in the way Walt carries himself as Mr. Lambert; perhaps he's coming back to destroy this terrible machine he created, and needs a noisy tool for one end of it, a quiet one for the other.

I was hoping for a little post-show discussion...

at any rate, it's interesting that they are setting up an alternate to Walt (or, maybe a competitor to Walt once he finds his stuff is being marketed and it's not as pure as he would like and gets back in the game).

have to say that I like that they dove head first into Hank fingering Walt in the first episode, gets that out of the way (and it was becoming a little ridiculous last season).

Walf knows the meth is still being made; he helped keep the process going. And Lydia told Walt about the big decline in the quality of the meth in the first episode of the return, when she came to the car wash to try and convince Walt to come back and get things on track again. Walt told her no chance, and Skylar sent her on her way with a flea in her ear for good measure.

Since Todd is apparently only slightly better than Declan's cook, that leaves Jesse as Lydia's only hope of getting the cook back up to Heisenberg's standards. That could be bad news for Hank.

Plenty of momentum this episode for me, even if the previous episode was 100 megatons to this episode's 90 megatons.

[spoiler=Boom]
Hank + Skylar
Marie vs. Skylar
Marie + Holly
Skylar vs. Marie
Hank vs. Marie
Lydia vs. Declan
Lydia + Todd and family
Walt + the desert Walt + Skylar
Hank + Jesse
[/spoiler]

And the return of the tighty whities!

Yes the Louboutin pumps on Lydia while she tours the underground meth lab and then steps over dead bodies in the desert is something you'd pretty much only see in this show

just watched "Buried," like it

the female characters on this show are great

, if secondary. If you want to check out some awesome female LEADS, watch Orange is the New Black on Netflix. Confusedmiley-music039:

I don't view them as secondary, especially not Skylar.

I haven't checked out the prison show, seems like a depressing topic. Then again I've watched 5 seasons of a show about a man dying of lung cancer who makes meth, so, well, OK I'll check it out.

Indeed!

Skylar is not secondary to the plot, but from an actor's perspective she gets really short shrift in this series. In my estimation, she deserved a lot more screen time and dialogue. A fantastic actor and a huge part of why i love the show.

Re: Breaking Bad, S5E10 [spoilers] - Black - 08-20-2013

In trying to find other series to invest in, I'm questioning what it is I like so much about this show, and keep coming back to the ease with which it's possible to suspend reality while watching.
Why is that exactly? It's pretty preposterous from start to finish, right?
Why are there seemingly so few other shows that hit that magic ingredient?

Re: Breaking Bad, S5E10 [spoilers] - Lemon Drop - 08-20-2013

good question -
I also recommend the series "Damages" with Glenn Close

With Breaking Bad I think it's the combination of exceptional writing, acting, and deep symbolism, combined with putting ordinary people in extraordinary yet somehow plausible circumstances.
