what's the best use for a Late 2005 PowerMac G5? - decay - 08-29-2013

I got a free 2.3 dual core G5 tower that was going to the dump.

Given its limitations (PPC, max OS 10.5.8), what's a good use for it?

I know it pulls a lot of wattage and generates heat; maybe I set up a file server in my guest bathroom this Fall & Winter when it's cold?

All kidding aside, I'd like to see someone local get use out of it.

Gut it and use the case for a Hackintosh.

I posted about this about a month back. Asking lots of questions. In the end I shipped it to my nephew (10) in Phoenix for $35. We found a dell 19" wide monitor on craigslist for $38 after dickering. Now he can do his homework in his room, surf the web and get his mail. One of the more exciting apps to install was Plex as he enjoys watching the sports clips.

thanks, dave.

i'd like to give it to an underprivileged family or something.

Sell it for what you can get, then put the money towards a MacBook for the family. I would not give a space heater like that to an underprivileged family without specifically warning them about it's power use.

I'd warn them not to leave it on, or to use it in their coldest room.

Big Grin

You can still do a fair amount of audio recording and mixing work on a G5, assuming the software you need isn't Intel only. Maybe some aspiring musician?

Send it to Paul F. who is retiring his faltering G5 Xserve?

That was my favorite G5... pretty peppy PPC, ran quiet compared to the G4's and earlier G5's, and quieter, though not as peppy as the DP DC 2.5GHz G5 "quad". Unless someone needs the latest and greatest, it's a darn fine machine for most basic functions through Leopard 10.5.8. Heck, if mine hadn't blown its power supply, I'd probably still be using it. Did finally sell off the G5 quad a couple of months ago, along with its DVI to ADC adapter; mostly because of the noise, heat, and power usage... not because of its functionality. Please do see that it gets into appreciative hands, though not so underprivileged that they can't afford the electric bill. :-)
As noted, there are specialty groups that still rely on G5's, so if it's clean and runs well, you could probably fetch $200-$300, or maybe a bit more depending on RAM, video, drives, and PCIe cards.

RAM is only at 1.5 GB; 2x256, 2x512. 4 slots empty.
no PCI cards. 256 MB NVIDIA Geforce video card, w/ 2 DVI connectors.
