Skype quality/reliability over the past year or so - space-time - 08-29-2013

We use skype a lot, as our families and friends are in Romania and I prefer to talk and see them in Skype rather than pay for long distance. I have been using skype since 2005 or so, maybe earlier.

I noticed over the past year that occasionally I get disconnected for no reason. or that I have to ring multiple times to make a connection. Also I don't see in real time who's online and who is not. If my Dad was online yesterday, my Skype still shows he is online. I use LogMeIn and I can see he was offline for 18 ours or so. I try to ring on Skype, and after it rings about 8-10 times, then it tells me that Daddy is offline.

It used to work much better a few years ago. I would see in real time when someone went offline. I would rarely get disconnected. There was very few cases where image and sound would be out of sync. Now that happens a lot.

I am starting to look for alternatives. Facetime would do with those who are in the Apple ecosystem, but I need something else for the few friends who are still in Windows. Maybe I give Yahoo Messenger or Google Talk a try.

Did the problems first start sometime after May 10, 2011?

I've noticed similar issues with several streaming services and even VOIP systems.

I've read this article. If we don't have any real competition, then let the government supply the service.

Skype has been degraded by M$. Their acquisition of Skype has been extremely lamentable
for Skype users. Their upgrades suck. Their dumping of MSN regulars to Skype also increased
traffic. The inherent lameness of M$ permeates the sphere of Skype.

Skype has become so wonky these days I really @#$%)* %^$@!)! &$#)*&@~! :banghead:
