Comcast internet: "connection timeout" - Gutenberg - 08-30-2013 My Comcast internet connection has gone crazy. It won't accept my wpa password and keeps reporting a "connection timeout." That's on my computer, a MacBook Pro. My iPhone gets about .75 mb down and .30 mb up, when I am lucky. Mostly it works on cellular data. My iPad won't connect at all. I'm guessing my modem is fried. Any other ideas? Thanks, Gutie Re: Comcast internet: "connection timeout" - rgG - 08-30-2013 Have you reset the modem? There is often a button you push and hold, or a paper clip slot or something. It would be worth a try. Do you have a router in the mix? Re: Comcast internet: "connection timeout" - Gutenberg - 08-30-2013 Yes, I have done all that. I have plugged and unplugged and done the whole dance. The router is a Netgear. I have plugged and unplugged and punched all the buttons on it too. When you call Comcast tech support the mechanical lady recording says it will send a refresh message to the modem, and that worked a couple of times but no more. Edit--I brought all three machines to work today and they all receive the signal here, so they are not the problem. Re: Comcast internet: "connection timeout" - OWC Jamie - 08-30-2013 Went thru that after a lightning strike with cable and after modem replacements and replacing all the "defective cable with too many splices " a tech who liked climbing poles did something down the street and all the problems went away. Same with DSL - the problem was down the street in a above ground box. I think you just have to exhaust all the easy fixes with them first. Re: Comcast internet: "connection timeout" - Filliam H. Muffman - 08-30-2013 Is it a Netgear cable modem with WiFi that you bought, or is it one that you are renting from Comcast? What model is it? Edit: looks like you did reset to factory defaults (deleted question) Does it work when you are connected with an Ethernet cable? Re: Comcast internet: "connection timeout" - Gutenberg - 08-30-2013 The Netgear is rented from Comcast, yes. I don't know the model. Yes, I did get a strong signal when I connected to the modem directly with ethernet. So it might be the router that's fried? Re: Comcast internet: "connection timeout" - rgG - 08-30-2013 Gutenberg wrote: I would strongly suspect the router. Do you have a friend who has a spare router lying around that you could borrow for a few days, to test? Re: Comcast internet: "connection timeout" - pdq - 08-30-2013 Might as well set up a chair near your modem, grab a beer, take a deep breath and go ahead and call India. It's gonna be a long, aggravating process. Re: Comcast internet: "connection timeout" - Gutenberg - 09-02-2013 Update--it's the modem. They're sending a new one. Comcast says they upgraded the service to my area and it wacked out my modem. |
