FU: Rumors Of My Demise Have Been Greatly Exaggerated - my MBA SSD - Markintosh - 09-01-2013

The verdict from the Apple Store today is that the SSD in my MBA passed all hardware tests. I watched the basic test run three times and the advanced drive test once. Following that, the tech was able to Netboot, wipe the drive and restore to an up to date image.

So apparently, it was not just my data that was damaged, the Restore partition was also damaged. That made the Hardware tests and restore attempts from the Restore partition freeze or fail last night.

Just restored it to my year old TM backup. Now running a year's worth of updates. Next will trim the chaff and add in the recent documents I was able to recover last night.

FWIW, the tech did document that my machine was brought in for the problem within the warranty period and there was no charge for today's assessment, which took about an hour....just in case there is another problem.

I also think it's time to invest in a Time Capsule to automate the back up thing for all 3 laptops in our family.

My Time Capsule was the best purchase I've made in a long time to deal with my family backups. Also works as a good wifi hub.

I'm slightly confused-- you stated that it was out of warranty in the previous thread...

Well...three days out of warranty. The tech chose to ignore that or not recognize it.

What exactly is Time Capsule as compared to Time Machine?

Time Machine is the software. it will back up to USB/FW/TB hard drives (and maybe internal hard drives), or to a NAS (network atatched storage, i.e. network hard drive).

Time Capsule is the hardware, i.e. an Airport Extreme Base Station with a built-in hard drive. You then set up Time Machine to back up to Time Capsule. another solution is to buy an Airport base station and attach a USB hard drive. it's like a DYI Time Capsule.
