Guess who's overthinking something again. - wurm - 09-01-2013
The plastic tether broke off my gas cap a couple of weeks ago, and I'm looking for an easy, cheap way to reconnect or more likely, replace it. If I use some strong wire or twine, can you think of any reason this won't work? I already considered just getting a new cap, but the new ones don't come with the tether attached. Yeah, yeah, I shouldn't need a tether, but as my feeble brain ages, I don't want to be one of those people who puts the cap on the pump, then forgets about it.

Ought to work fine.. I'd go with something like fishing line so the cap won't be hard to turn.

Just don't drill it while it's still attached to the car. :-)

I think a good stout chain welded just inside the filler is a great idea.

Just keep in mind that the original center location had the advantage of allowing the tether to rotate when unscrewing the cap. The new location will require the tether to go around as you unscrew, will also get tangled in your fingers/hand.
I'd probably avoid string/twine or anything that can absorb gasoline. Maybe good sturdy mono-filament from a weed whacker.

Some kind of nylon, and braid it so when one thread breaks, the others won't. Then redo it after the first break.
