Replace combo drive in '08 Macbook question - rouderon - 09-02-2013

I have a superdrive from an '06 iMac and want to replace the combo drive in a white '08 Macbook - any way to know if it will be compatible with the Macbook before I take on this task?

Should work, but a TON of work.

How much does that optical drive get used? How about a $25 external instead?

Thanks! - that may be the best alternative

I've had mixed success installing dvd drives from one unit to another, but I don't think this will fit. Pretty sure the imac drive is 15mm and the macbook is 12mm.

PS - even if it was guaranteed to work, I'd probably still opt for an external

Good external BR drives are under $50.
