Oh, heck, why *not* get the Verax kit for MDD? - Greg the dogsitter - 07-25-2006

$209 from this place.

Why not?: $209.

Why 1? Highly rated.
Why 2? Makes the MDD silent(-ish?), so MG doesn't have to listen to it scream all day.
Why 3? Look, I'm not exactly pulling minimum wage. I don't want to spend a week's worth of evenings investigating how to make the ol' MDD cooler, when that time could be far better spent.

Anything I haven't covered?

Thanks quite-a-bit,

GtDS

Why not?

Because you're NOT retarded and would rather just buy a used G5 to replace it with.

Because you want to send Grim your processor because he's having a horrible week which started with the processor in his MDD frying and leaving him stranded on the case-free ATXG4 test model running at 466 Mhz and it's driving him insane...

Why not, it follows with your normal purchasing strategy.

Yes, you prefer spending ridiculous amounts of money to fix problems quickly and safely. This fits that strategy.

go for it!
when you do eventually sell, it will be a great added feature!

i actually may jump on that deal if the new mac pros are not quite
what I need/want...

post again with your results if you do buy it...

I tried to explain my reasoning.

Do you think spending money and fixing problems are somehow exclusive? It seems that the Verax kit is the best fix for this situation. I'm open to alternatives, though. Can you provide any suggestions?

For $200 it still isn't that quiet. A G5 will be a lot quieter or any model G4. It isn't like they make the thing silent like a cube or iMac G3/G4. Also, I don't think you will get anything more durring resale for it. Just seems like a waste.

You live with MacGyver? I'd think he'd be able to fix it with whatever is at hand!

Wink

Greg, are you in Kansas City? If so, you could have my MDD hard drive & heatsink cooler fan, shown on this page:

http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/systems/mdd_cooling_mods/MDD_cooling_mods3.html#storytop

It helped quite a bit. I also replaced the huge lower fan with a Panaflo 120mm mid-speed fan. That was the biggest improvement.

The Verax kit is wonderful if you have the cash. My solution was a bit cheaper. Anyway, I upgraded to a G5, so this fan mod is sitting in a box. If you're in K.C. let me know and it's yours.
