Anybody had any problems using Apple lossless instead of uncompressed aiff? Any difficulties burning CDs, etc.?

The big issue I have with Apple Lossless is that it's a proprietary format. This limits its usefulness tremendously. Want to throw a bunch of files on a CD and play it on an MP3-CD player or in a DVD player in a home entertainment system? Sorry. Ain't gonna happen. You'll have to reburn them in a different format. Want to play the music on a machine that doesn't have iTunes (or other software that can play Apple Lossless or on a non-Apple MP3 player? Sorry. Ain't gonna happen without reencoding. you get the idea.

It's only useful for archiving/shaving small amounts of bits off the file size of full-size AIFFs. Its utility for this purpose -- in this era of cheap, plentiful storage -- is negligible.

I'll never understand why Apple didn't go with FLAC or SHN. Do we really need ANOTHER format to deal with?

It saves roughly 50% of the AIFF file size without any loss of quality on the sound . . . I'll take that for my collection of CDs. Not for my iPod, but definitely for a couple of hard drives. One for backup . . .
