Sears carries one also for slide windows, we picked one up on Sunday and it does a great job. The price was $419.00.

There are also the standalone ones on wheels with the exhaust vent tube. They apparently work sufficiently - not great, but can be moved from room to room easily and can vent to a small opening.

Re: Vertical air conditioner? - ArtP - 07-25-2006

I was researching these earlier this Summer and was wondering why the Vertical ones are so much more than a traditional one (about 2 or 3 times more).

Does the cooling unit or compressors have to be horizontal and a certain size or is it just a chance for companies to make extra profits?

BTW, I know U can't just turn a horizontal AC on it's side but when I compared the cheapie bottom of the line AC units to the Vertical ones, the Horizontal cheapie was ONLY 3-4 inches wider than the Vertical but the cheapie was $99 vs $350 for the Vertical...

Why?

When we purchased ours on Sunday we also bought a small horizontal one for my daughters bedroom, the horizontal one was $129.00 and would cool an 100 sq. ft. area, the vertical one we bought for the living room was $419.00 and would cool an 800 sq. ft area. That was the only reason for the price difference as far as I could tell.

You can find several, good models of portable AC units (similar to above, and larger) for around $299 and below. I would opt for one of those rather than a horizontal window unit...just personal preference for different potential uses.

I have one of the portable ones in my office (DeLonghi, 10000BTU, purchased at Lowe's)...mine came with a vent kit to let it vent through a slightly-opened window, but I opted to do the "semi-permanent" installation, where it vents through a dryer vent installed in the wall.

Less demand, and because they can.
