USPS - tape stamps (backless self-stick stamps) - Zoidberg - 07-25-2006

The USPS is apparently going to roll out a new stamp type for first class stamps; I've seen them called "tape stamps":

They're backless, and will work like a roll of tape.

Funny thing is that, though the USPS website (and specifically the store) shows them (that's where the picture's from), I can't find them anywhere on the site. My local post offices have no information on them -- they didn't know a new stamp type was in the works.

Funny thing is that all of them have the roll dispenser (shown in the picture) in their products window for a buck or something. No stamps, just the dispenser.

Anyone seen these? Or has marketing gotten ahead of engineering?

Isn't that what they are talking about when they refer to a "coil" of stamps on their web site?

Re: USPS - tape stamps (backless self-stick stamps) - Zoidberg - 07-25-2006

Any roll of stamps is a coil.

The dispenser you pictured holds coils. It may also hold tape stamps, but they are selling it to hold coils.

That's where you got me confused.

$tevie is correct.
Are these "Tape Stamps" critical at the moment?
If it is, we could rally together and bombard the USPS with email, hold giant rallies, and protests till they release these highly critical "Tape Stamps". Once you get these stamps, hopefully you will be able to make world peace happen, or feed all the starving folk, or was it just curing the common cold. We must get these stamps for Dr. Zoidberg!! These tape stamps are more accurately referred to as "linerless coils." They've been produced in the past, but there were too many problems with them (difficult to separate) to warrant continued production. The USPS has no plans to produce them again in the near future.

Re: USPS - tape stamps (backless self-stick stamps) - Zoidberg - 07-25-2006

Okay, okay, BGnR; it was more a curiosity than anything else. The local PO's are selling the dispensers as if there's a new stamp type coming, but no one knew of it. Admittedly, a weird thing for me to research.

Thanks, $tevie for the info. Again, the coil dispenser's packaging was going on about "new self-stick backless stamps" on its sell sheet. The wording said it'd be like a tape roll -- like Scotchâ„¢ tape.

Thanks tronnei for the info. That would explain why there's no appearance of them beyond a mention on the packaging for the dispenser.

Now to get more coffee and pretend I never posted this.

Inaccurate advertising seems to be getting worse. Not so long ago I was on a trip over very salty roads. I found a carwash that advertised "undercarriage wash" on the signs at the gas pump. So I bought a carwash. I Went to the carwash and when I drove up I realized there was nothing setup to do such a wash. I tried to get my money back, no luck. I asked why the sign advertised that if they didn't have it and they said "well, the signs come form California. maybe the carwashes there have them."

I have bought software that states it comes with something free. When I try to get it, they tell me that promotion is over even though no where on the box does it provide an expiration date.

I had one client who basically put a coupon code in their emails which said "use this to get 50% off all future purchases." Well, they really only meant off of your next purchase. I tried to get them to change it but they wouldn't. They are a former client now.

In this case it's just a matter of the packaging being old... it used to be companies would recall their product and issue it with new packaging if this happened. Or they would at least supply stickers (or something) to the reseller to make sure the advertising on the packaging was still accurate.

As Zoidberg noted, the confusion on this was caused by out-dated and/or inaccurate advertising on the packaging. I cited several other examples of this happening, and how the issue seems to be getting more frequent.
