Congressional Email - rankandfile - 10-03-2013 I received an email from my Tea Party Congressman. It's full of smoke. I tried to respond but my reply bounced. I'm going to post it here, for those who might be interested, and also to see if others have gotten similar missives. As you will see, Mr. Wilson has no shame when it comes to telling outright lies. This is the same congressman who shouted, "You lie!" at the State of the Union. _____ October 3, 2013 Dear , Thank you for your recent correspondence regarding the current debate over funding the government through a continuing resolution. I appreciate your taking the time to contact me. I understand your concerns and welcome your interest in this matter. As you are aware, the previously authorized Continuing Resolution (CR) to fund the government, H.R. 933, the "Consolidated and Further Continuing Appropriations Act, 2013," expired on September 30, 2013. October 1, 2013, marked the beginning of Fiscal Year 2014 and with the absence of a funding agreement the government has shut down, with the exception of certain emergency related services and other essential operations. For over two weeks, the House of Representatives has made several attempts to fund the government and avert a government shutdown, to no avail. On September 20, 2013, I voted along with a majority of my House colleagues to approve H.J. Res. 59, the "Continuing Appropriations Resolution, 2014," by a vote of 230 to 189. As introduced on September 10, 2013, H.J. Res. 59, would make continuing appropriations for Fiscal Year 2014 until December 15, 2013. This piece of legislation also contained provisions which would protect Americans from the negative impacts of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. In the past, I have voted to defund, delay, and repeal the President's unsustainable healthcare law and have supported the House's efforts to address the issue at this time. Despite the efforts of the House, the Senate has refused to negotiate on any of the funding legislation sent to their Chamber. To date, the House of Representatives has approved four spending bills, the most recent of which Majority Leader Reid tabled without even allowing for debate. In an effort to bring members from both chambers together for negotiation, the House voted to request a conference with the Senate to resolve differences, only to be rejected once again. At this time, the House of Representatives has moved forward by introducing smaller spending bills to fund portions of the government, such as passing H.R. 3210, the "Pay Our Military Act," which protects the salaries of active duty military personnel. H.R. 3210 was signed by the President on September 30, 2013. The House has also recently considered protecting the salaries of our National Guard and Reserve members, and funding the Department of Veterans Affairs. Both initiatives currently await further consideration in the Senate. As you may be aware, a continuing resolution is a short term spending bill meant to continue federal appropriations at previously authorized levels in lieu of a regular budget and appropriations process. Congress has not followed regular order in years. Like you, I agree that this method of using a patchwork of last minute spending bills to continue operations has succeeded in causing greater uncertainty during an already shaky economy. Until an agreement can be reached, I have requested to withhold my Congressional salary as thousands of other federal employees, including hardworking employees at the Savannah River Site and Fort Jackson, experience furloughs. As negotiations continue, having the benefit of your views is imperative as I continue to work with my colleagues to pass legislation to improve our nation and the lives of our citizens. It is my hope that we may reach a final agreement which will adequately reflect the most efficient investment of taxpayers' dollars in exchange for a more prosperous and secure America. Please be assured that I will keep your thoughts in mind as Congress continues to debate funding levels during the 113th Congress. It is an honor to represent the people of the Second Congressional District of South Carolina, and I value your input. If I may be of further assistance to you, please do not hesitate to contact me.
