Recording a stream with VLC... - gabester - 10-16-2013

All indicators suggest VLC has the ability to record a stream... There seem to be plenty of options for it.

But I can't actually get it to work. Rather, I appear to be capturing a stream to a file but it doesn't play back...

Say, this one: http://provisioning.streamtheworld.com/pls/WGNTWOAM.pls

I found this set of instructions but it's for a linux instance and the dialogs are different than OS X:

OK, maybe I figured it out with VLC 2.0.3... use the File menu > Streaming/Exporting Wizard, and the format should be .ts file then transcode that later into something sensible like MP4.

You might try upgrading to the latest version (2.1). You have to download it from their site though.

Use the Advanced Open option instead of the Wizard.

Click on the Network tab, paste in the URL, select your Streaming/Saving options (don't forget to specify a wrapper (a.k.a. "encapsulation method") and Bob's yer uncle.

I've never been able to get that streaming option to work, either. And I really did have an Uncle Bob...

gabester,

There is a Firefox plugin Called Ant that allows you to download streams as flv files. I tested it on a couple and it worked well. Maybe it'll do the job for you?
