Got a free Pentax camera! - DP - 10-18-2013

Specifically, a K1000 35mm film camera with an SMC Pentax-A 50mm f2. A client has had this in a cabinet and hasn't been used in eons after they went to digital (which one camera they have and use is a Sony Mavica!). It also came with a Vivitar 2x macro focusing teleconverter and a Vivitar 283 flash.
They were literally going to toss it! No one wanted it and they thought I could find a use for it; even telling me I could put it on eBay or CL if I wanted...
I may give it to the school I where I teach to use in the photo fundamentals classes. The battery is dead but otherwise it seems to be in excellent shape-there is virtually no wear inside and the shutter works just fine. No wear along the film guides. The shutter speed dial is stiff and the aperture ring is too.
Maybe I'll run a roll of film thru it...

Are the light seals good?

Being a mechanical camera, it would be useful for prime focus astrophotography on cold winter nights. :-)

Those things were built like tanks. Ought to last another 30 years!

It's no D600

Re: Got a free Pentax camera! - DP - 10-18-2013

Looks like it's about a 1988 model-WIki says "in 1988, the body only was $210, but $290 with SMC Pentax-A 50 mm f/2". It looks like the battery is for the light meter only. The shutter seems mechanically operated.

DP, you're correct: you can use that camera just fine without the battery if you can do without the meter. And I'm pretty sure the battery is still available.

A set of LR44 / SR44 / 357 / 303 batteries should do the job just fine.

No, no, it says to use an A76! Big Grin
I have a roll of Fuji Super HQ I will run thru it to test for light tight. I have an old roll of Plus-X I've had in my fridge but I would have to process it and I don't have the time. Anyway, just testing for leaks.
