Options for using an ATT iPhone on a prepaid plan? - pinkoos - 11-15-2013 So, just in case I can't get my wife's iPhone unlocked by ATT, I'm exploring prepaid options that I can use with an ATT-locked iPhone. The obvious choice is ATT's own prepaid plan, but I don't think the pricing on that is very competitive. I know some have recommended Straight Talk. I've looked on their site and it looks like you're given the option of either ordering an ATT SIM or a TMobile SIM. So, I'm assuming an ATT SIM should have no problem working in her iPhone? Are there other options if her phone has to stay locked to ATT until this coming October when her contract will be up? Thanks. I'm going to recommend my son look at air voice. not sure if the phone has to be unlocked or not. Re: Options for using an ATT iPhone on a prepaid plan? - mattkime - 11-15-2013 I'm digging through this as well but haven't come to any conclusions. Re: Options for using an ATT iPhone on a prepaid plan? - rgG - 11-15-2013 My daughter has been on H2O wireless for a couple of years, with a locked AT&T iPhone 4. No problems. She will be switching to Verizon, on her grandmother's plan, for the coverage and a new phone, but the H2O service has been fine. Note, if you go with H20, you can buy your refill PINs from CallingMart, and usually save 5%, with an email code that they send out about once a month. Re: Options for using an ATT iPhone on a prepaid plan? - GuyGene - 11-15-2013 Been using iPhone 5 on Straight Talk since January. Loving it! I bought iPhone at Apple store full price to save $ versus a contract. No SIM card, had to order one from Straight Talk and cut it to nano sim size with scissors. I just kind of eyeballed it from a template I downloaded for A4 paper and I only had US Letter paper, so that's why I eye balled my cut. You can now get Straight Talk SIM cards for $7 or so. I just ordered another one this week. Can't beat saving lucres. Re: Options for using an ATT iPhone on a prepaid plan? - Felix - 11-16-2013 Anybody try Pure Talk? Re: Options for using an ATT iPhone on a prepaid plan? - mattkime - 11-16-2013 do these support 4G? Re: Options for using an ATT iPhone on a prepaid plan? - datbeme - 11-16-2013 Not what you're looking for, but here is a real world example. My son had a cheapy Android GoPhone that refused to hold a charge. I cut down the sim a couple of weeks ago and put it into an old iPhone 4 (had ATT unlock it as it was out of contract and sitting in a drawer). Here's the catch (and the best part of it for me): We get around the data subscription because the point is for him to be able to call and text. He's welcome to use WiFi at our house and friends' houses, but data seems like an unnecessary expense at this point. We use the 10 cents/minute plan and buy the 1000 texts for $9.99. So far so good over the last few weeks. He has an iPhone (without data) for just over $10/month. In fact, I don't know that he's ever exceeded 200 texts (and iMessage only helps when at home), so cutting the $9.99 to $4.99 is even doable. Is there a better deal out there for an iPhone? This is why the resale value of your out of contract phone is so good. SHHHHHH!!!! Don't let AT&T catch on. From what I've been told, there are effective workarounds for adding data, but that adds $$$ that I'm not looking to add. My wife and I are not heavy users so did not get a data plan - we pay $15/month total for two phones sharing 190 minutes/month that roll over (we currently have 564 available). My son had the Unlimited plan at $45/month which gave him data as well. For light usage, it cannot be beat. However I believe StraightTalk is better for unlimited usage (more data @ same price) Also - I had to deal with Pure Talk support once and they were fantastic - very helpful, patient and stateside. |
