Quiet, Small, Air Compressor for indoor use? - chopper - 11-17-2013
Picked up a small pancake air compressor from Harbor Freight last summer for cheap, hoping it was going to be quiet enough for indoor use with an airbrush.
That is not happening. Just fired it up ... in my little room it is like a WWII gun nest. INCOMING! HIT THE DECK! It will be relegated to garage use only and then only with the door open.
Youtube has some interesting videos on the subject but I've never heard of any of the compressors.
Anyone here using a really quiet indoor unit?

You can only get two out of your three wishes. I love an air compressor in a separate building with adequate plumbing. I suppose you could put your compressor in a closet in another room in your neighbor's home.

The artist airbrush compressors are quieter. And more $$.

What's your budget? I'd suggest getting one that has a tank so it doesn't run constantly. But you can get quiet compressors without a tank.
I use a Badgder Million-air for my airbrushing. It's very quiet; the loudest sound is a "pop" from the relief valve when the motor stops. Silentaire is a good brand too. Chicago Airbrush Supply is a good outfit. You might try calling them for advice.

You can also just get a fairly good size tank, fill it with the compressor, use it till it runs out, wash, rinse, repeat.
Since you already have a compressor, just getting a tank would probably be the cheapest solution.

I love an air compressor in a separate building with adequate plumbing.
that's what I have at work. Oil free compressed dry air. But I still prefer Nitrogen
. I also have a vacuum line.

Heh... We have a real classic in one of the buildings... it's a giant radial engine air compressor.. I believe it dates to about 1946. Looks a lot like a B-24 engine. Still in use.

I once had one of these Central Pneumatic's, they are small and extremely quiet, sometimes on sale for <$40.
