If you are planning to return an item, don't forget to include time to deal with escalating customer service issues. As noted in Terrible Target's Apocalyptic Conclusion, Target occasionally seems to be interested in keeping customers happy.

"Minimum wage retail workers usually don't care about you."
That would be more truthful.

Yep, I had no idea that Best Buy had such a crappy return policy. They have lowered it down to 15 days. I won't shop there again. Had a car receiver die completely after 20 days, they wanted to send it off to service to repair it. I told them they could either give me a refund or I would contest the charge with my CC company because they sold defective merchandise. I got a refund and haven't been back.
A month should be the bare minimum and there are plenty of retails that meet that or exceed.

DiscoverCard users can get extra leniency with some of their purchases (up to 90 days I think) even if the store balks.
