And on an somewhat unrelated note: Blu-Ray on iMac - wurm - 11-28-2013 While I'm thinking about it, here's another question. I have a 2006 iMac running 10.6.8. I prefer to watch DVDs on it rather than the TV, because I can use my headphones and not disturb the rest of the sleeping household. But I am missing out on a lot of newer movies my daughter owns because she buys the Blu-Ray versions. Also, I'm finding that sometimes a Blu-Ray version of a movie is available on Redbox before the DVD version. So the question is, how easy is it to watch a Blu-Ray disc on my iMac? Obviously I'd need an external DVD player hooked up to my iMac (via USB?) Recommendations for a reasonably priced one to get? It might be a nice suggestion for my kids to chip in and get me for Christmas since I can’t think of anything else I want or need and they've been hounding me for ideas. Re: And on an somewhat unrelated note: Blu-Ray on iMac - kj4btkljv - 11-28-2013 This article is from June of this year, so it's still got good info: Watch and rip Blu-ray movies on your Mac http://www.macworld.com/article/2042431/watch-and-rip-blu-ray-movies-on-your-mac.html Jeff Re: And on an somewhat unrelated note: Blu-Ray on iMac - Grateful11 - 11-28-2013 Thanks for that link kj4btkljv. I have a Pioneer Blu-Ray reader/writer hooked up my iMac and have always had trouble ripping my Blu-Rays and not getting the so called burned in subtitles, so I'll give it a good read and see if it has any tips. I've got the Aurora player it works well. There's an option in there to add subs for whatever language is on the disk, and to make them forced (when the spoken language is different than English, or whatever main language the movie is in). Works pretty well in my experience. https://trac.handbrake.fr/wiki/Subtitles Jeff Re: And on an somewhat unrelated note: Blu-Ray on iMac - Grateful11 - 11-28-2013 I haven't been able to get HandBrake to work since the last update. It will Queue them up and then nothing. It won't even attempt to rip a DVD or Blu-Ray. It used to be my most used program for ripping. Didn't even know it would do a Blu-Ray now. I have something I got for free that I posted on here sometime ago for Blu-Rays. Re: And on an somewhat unrelated note: Blu-Ray on iMac - wurm - 11-28-2013 Hmmm. Not encouraging. I don't even want to rip or burn. I just want to watch the thing. Maybe I should just buy a cheapish blu-ray player and hook it up to an extra TV we have and keep it next to my computer rather than try to make one work with the iMac. Re: And on an somewhat unrelated note: Blu-Ray on iMac - onthedownlow - 11-28-2013 Get DVDFab - done. (Get a lifetime license - my recommendation) Re: And on an somewhat unrelated note: Blu-Ray on iMac - mlfrank - 11-28-2013 For watching blu-rays, I've been using a program (oddly enough) called Blu-Ray Player without any issues. Have used it on a 2008 imac as well as a 2009 mac mini. You do have to have a blu-ray drive - fortunately OWC has a small reader for $50 today and a writer for $95. http://blog.macsales.com/12010-play-blu-ray-movies-on-your-mac-without-converting-them-first http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/MRSSBD6X/ Re: And on an somewhat unrelated note: Blu-Ray on iMac - kj4btkljv - 11-28-2013 I just discovered this a few days ago... The app MakeMKV, paired up with a Bluray drive in my Mac Pro, can stream a Bluray movie to another Mac on the same network. That other Mac needs to have VLC, but that's it. https://sites.google.com/site/ultimatemacupgrades/articles/0000002y/requirements/step-4 Jeff |
