(Sigh...) Kitchen sink totally clogged - DP - 11-28-2013

Wife admits to putting something down there she shouldn't have, right in the middle of preparing Thxgvng dinner. Took apart the pipes under the sink but it seems somewhere further down the line although the good news is that it isn't blocking everything so I can still flush a toilet without making things worse.
But, dinner is still coming along fine and I will get to it tomorrow when I remember where I put my drain snake...
Too many folks out that don't even have pipes to clean out, tho... And she is still the best wife I could ever ask for! Not that I never did anything annoying to her Big Grin

You're up early, Rudie! 4:33 PM here-about 5:33 AM for you?

You are right DP.
I have students from Moscow to the Far Easter Region of Russian in
Khabarovsk. I had an MBA Student with a double lesson this morning
starting @ 7:30 Khabarovsk time and that is 3 hours ahead of my
time zone so I have been up early *(:>*

Have you ever tried the old garden hose down the pipe trick ?
Stuff the hose in the pipe seal up around the hose with old rags
or anything you have thats better and turn the hose on full blast . . .
It actually works some times.

I recommend the opposite of a garden hose. The clog happened going down. It should break apart going the other way. Put a shop vac on it and in 2-5 seconds you can have a clear drain. My neighbor worked on his for 45 minutes till I took my shop vac there. About 2 seconds later he was clear.

I second Dennis R's suggestion in this case unless it was grease or something that solidified on the way down. Then it's Roto-Rooter time.

Re: (Sigh...) Kitchen sink totally clogged - space-time - 11-29-2013

Happened to us on Thanksgiving about 9 years ago. All units above me had to stop using the sink that day. Landlord tried to clean if with a snake, he ended up with some sort of monster snake which he put in from the roof (I guess there was a vent on the roof). Messes up his thanksgiving and that of his nephew. We took the turkey and drove to a friend and baked it there. When we got home the drain was clear. Next day he told us he was on the roof in the rain snaking most of the evening. No one knows which resident did if since it was the main drain in a multi-story building.

Have you tried putting very hot ~ boiling water in the sink? Sometimes that helps dissolve / break up a clog.
