New thread about the weather Down South.... - DP - 01-29-2014

Atlanta, Birmingham, Charleston...
Just saw a GDOT camera shot of I-75 over the Chattahoochee.. Are you kidding me? Just stopped both ways full of abandoned cars.
Did everyone's kids, husbands, wives, etc., get home or are sheltering safely?

Some students in Atlanta spent the overnight in school. A couple students spent the night on their school bus.

Spoke with someone in central AL last night and his daughter works at a hospital and she spent the night
at work due to the roads being clogged with vehicles.

In New Orleans, on the drive home last night, there were just a few accidents, but only about 10% of the normal traffic. The Causeway Bridge over Lake Pontchartrain was closed with ice, so I went through New Orleans East on I-10. Approaching the Twin-Span to Slidell, a semi was backing up after having crashed through barricades indicating the bridge was closed due to ice. The old Hwy 11 bridge was open and I eventually made it home. This morning all routes into town are closed, so I'm working from home.

My wife was going to try and get to NOLA from Houston today, but I-10 is closed from Lafayette to Slidell. I told her she's better off staying where she is until tomorrow.

Atlanta is a complete mess: http://www.ajc.com/news/news/local/gridlock-continues-as-unspeakably-horrible-commute/nc53m/

15 people overnighted at my office in Birmingham. Those that left took 4-12 hours to get home. I'm fortunately in NY on production.

I can't understand why anyone here (in NOLA) would be driving right now.

Atlanta, honestly, it sounds awful, and a complete fail on the part of the city's prep crew. Those of you there (rgG, DavidS, deco, etc.), I feel your pain.

My husband finally got home. Took him five hours to go about ten miles.
My daughter made it about six miles in about two hours. Three people from her office are trapped in cars on the highway somewhere in the metro area, waiting for the National Guard to rescue them.
We do not plan on leaving the house today, hopefully.
I am going to call my mom, who lives about 100 miles east of here and make sure she is OK.

FWIW, usually such areas do not have the equipment to deal with anything like that because it's so unusual. Here's the closest parallel:

A herd of angry elephants rampages through a midwestern US town. The Sheriff is excoriated in the press for not having trained mahouts on staff.

In laughing at the concept of municipal mahouts. :-D
